Our Opening and Your Responsibilities

METTLER TOLEDO Thornton, a Strategic Business Unit within MTPRO-US, is a leading supplier for on-line liquid process measurement solutions for pure and ultrapure water applications.  Thornton's innovative analytical measurement solutions provide monitoring and control capabilities to customers in the Pharmaceutical, Microelectronics, and Power generation industries.

Based in our Tucson site, the Principal Optical Engineer is a leading technical innovator and hands-on contributor as part of the R&D team to investigate, design, develop, and maintain optical-based products, technologies and instrumentation for the measurement of real time detection of microbial matter.  The product technology is based on laser-induced molecular spectroscopy and light scattering processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • This position investigates, designs and develops optical-based solutions and systems for new process control measurement instrumentation and their test systems, and assures that all proper documentation is generated and in place for Production and QC to build and test the product. 
  • Broad optical-based instrumentation and product design experience is required, including fundamental knowledge and experience in lasers, molecular spectroscopy, scattering, fiber optics, optical modeling, low light level detection, and optical signal optimization. 
  • You will Work in a dynamic, cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team environment, between the AZ and Billerica, MA locations.  This position also supports the manufacturing and service team throughout the life cycle of products.
  • Conducts basic-to-advanced optical and/or spectroscopy-based research related to new or existing technologies, product applications, or new products.
  • Qualifies and selects optical and electro-optical components
  • Serve as project leader/lead engineer as part of a cross-functional product development team to create new products, features, services, and processes

What You Need to Succeed

  • MS in Optical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, E.E., M.E. or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 10 year's experience in instrumentation system design for particle and optical-based detection methods, including absorption, emission, and scattering processes.  Includes creation and design of optical, mechanical-optical, and electro-optical components for liquid process control instrumentation.  Low light level detection experience is required.
  • Optical innovation is a core skill
  • Technical leadership is a requirement, project leadership is a plus. 
  • Broad, but deep understanding in areas of optical and/or spectroscopic instrumentation such as UV/VIS emission and scattering sciences, optical modeling (ZEMAX), electro-optics, light sources, detectors, and optical components.  This
    knowledge set is required from ideation to prototyping to engineering design to integration into production
  • Proficiency with software design tools is required; Proficiency with ProE is valuable
