LGS Innovations, a leader in custom Research & Development for the US Government, is seeking a Principal Optical Investigator for our Florham Park, NJ location.
Job Description:
• Provide the optical leadership for a team of scientists and engineers inventing and developing new, custom high power optical sources for US Government purposes, including free-space optical communications and LIDAR. Develop new and innovative optical designs using doped-fiber, planar waveguide, and other technologies
• Work with customers to reach mutually-accepted set of specifications for complex projects, and flow those requirements down to subsystems in a Systems Engineering effort
• Develop trade studies to compare different potential designs and select the optimum approach
• Present results of work effectively in oral and written form
•Lead business development activities, develop new programs, and mentor less senior engineers.
•Meet with U.S. Government customers, understand customer technical problems, formulate creative solutions, contribute to selling of proposed solutions, and lead technical execution of resulting programs.
•Travel to other LGS Locations or Customer Sites as necessary
•Understand and adhere to all LGS Ethical and Compliance policies
•Proactively ensure a safe work environment and adhere to LGS EH&S policies and procedures
•Perform other duties as required
•Obtain/retain a government security clearance at the level to perform the job

Desired Background:
•8+ years of demonstrable experience related to fiber lasers and amplifiers (e.g. ultra-fast, high-average-power, and/or rare-earth-doped optical sources and amplifiers, including work on the effect of optical nonlinearities)
•Experience working in an inter-discipline team environment
•Subject-Matter Expert (SME) in field of Optical Research
•Good interpersonal skills
•Excellent presentation and writing skills
• Prefer Ph. D. in optics, physics, electrical engineering, or a related discipline, but strong candidates with an M.S. degree will also be considered
