Job Description: 

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Directed Energy Directorate, Laser Division, located in Albuquerque, NM on Kirtland AFB is seeking candidates with a mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, opto-mechanical engineering, controls systems or Physics background for the position of Self-protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator (SHiELD) Program, Integration Lead.  This position works closely with the SHiELD Program Manager, Chief Engineer and Test Director to develop subsystem integration requirements and oversees development and execution of the system-level integration and physical/ functional verification plans across government and contractor teams. Evaluates integration plans for beam control, system control, laser, power & cooling subsystems to support efficient execution and effective overall weapon system performance.  Maintains configuration control of subsystem interfaces, system integration plan, and system verification plan and ensures design compliance. Leads SHiELD Integration Working Group. Reviews and critiques contractor and government team subsystem and system integration plans, develops metrics to monitor integration progress, and develops contingency approaches, if needed, to support prompt and efficient program execution. Identifies risks and opportunities associated with I&T activities along with their associated cost/schedule/performance impacts. Develops plans to assess requirements verifications at subsystem and system level and ensures that appropriate data is collected throughout to support analysis of predicted system performance

Education or experience in the following areas is required: MS or PhD in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, opto-mechanical engineering, or controls systems. Experience planning and overseeing laser system or other complex system integration and test activities involving multiple subsystem developers.  Additionally, education or experience in these areas is helpful and highly desired: Understanding of project/program management techniques and methods utilized in multidisciplinary efforts, knowledge of cost, schedule and technical performance evaluation techniques, organizational and communications skills, as well as problem-solving ability. This position requires travel to support program reviews, testing and integration at locations other than Kirtland AFB.

This is a civilian position under the Laboratory Demonstration ("Lab Demo") pay plan, at the grade of DR-03 (roughly a GS-14 equivalent).  The salary range for a DR-03 is $105,175 to $148,630 which includes 16.68% Albuquerque locality pay. This position requires US citizenship and the ability to obtain/retain a Secret Security Clearance.
