Job Description: 

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Directed Energy Directorate, Mircowave Division, located in Albuquerque, NM on Kirtland AFB is seeking candidates with a Physics or Electrical Engineering background for the position of Ultrashort Pulse Laser (USPL) Scientist/Engineer.  The principle focus for this position is designing and conducting experiments and analysis to explore the directed energy applications of ultrashort pulse laser technology, at traditional and non-traditional wavelengths.  This effort includes understanding nonlinear propagation through turbulence as a function of wavelength, USPL ionization and plasma dynamics including induced secondary electromagnetic signals, and design, characterization and operation of novel USPL systems.  Education or experience in these areas is helpful and desired: Optical parametric amplification, short pulse CO2 lasers, ultrashort pulse laser-matter interactions, broadband RF detection methods, THz generation and detection, atmospheric propagation, laser beam control components such as fast steering mirrors, deformable mirrors.          

This is a civilian position under the Laboratory Demonstration ("Lab Demo") pay plan, at the grade of DR-02 (roughly a GS-12/13 equivalent).  The salary range for a DR-02 is $76,204 to $119,660 which includes 16.68% Albuquerque locality pay. This position requires US citizenship and the ability to obtain/retain a Secret Security Clearance.  The Microwave Division seeks recent PhD graduates with 5 years or less experience.
