As the Optical Research Engineer, this individual will participate and influence a variety of projects that will shape the next generation of medical intervention. They will become familiar with the clinical objectives, state of the art technologies, and technology trends. They will be responsible for development of fiber optic sensing systems for integration into endoscopic instruments. This individual will use his/her strong skills in fiber-based optical system design, opto-electronics, opto-mechanics, quantitative analysis, and software to develop and characterize fiber optic sensing systems, calibration fixtures and manufacturing tools. This position reports to the Manager, Vision Systems.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Develop optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) based sensing technologies
  • Characterize fiber sensing systems and benchmark against other sensor technologies
  • Develop specifications, test procedures, automated test fixtures, and test scripts
  • Develop and document software for calibration, processing, and broadcasting sensor data
  • Work with instrument engineering (mechanical) to integrate fiber sensors into endoscopic devices
  • Act as a Vision Systems representative during system level hardware/software integration
  • Drive efforts to verify and validate new product designs
  • Prepare and manage test protocols and reports according to external and internal standards
  • Collaborate with other engineers, external consultants and design firms to assist in debugging and optimizing system performance
  • Assist in the preparation and review of patent applications
  • Evaluate new technologies related to endoscopic fiber-based sensing
  • Other related duties as may be assigned
