Job Description: 

Overview:

As the optical systems engineer, this individual will be responsible for characterization and calibration of endoscopic imaging and vision devices in R&D programs. This individual will use his/her strong skills in optical system design & characterization, optoelectronics, image processing, computer vision, mathematics, and software to characterize optical systems, evaluate image processing pipelines and develop test and characterization fixtures. This position reports to the Manager, Vision Systems.

Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Quantify performance of endoscopic imaging and vision devices
  • Define optical systems requirements and specifications
  • Develop integration plans, test procedures and test fixtures/scripts
  • Work with clinical engineering to develop imaging system validation testing requirements
  • Develop software tools needed for optimization and calibration process
  • Act as a Vision Systems representative during system level hardware/software integration
  • Drive efforts to verify and validate new product designs
  • Prepare and mange test protocols and reports according to external and internal standards
  • Tabulate test data to support design specification and verify device performance.
  • Collaborate with other engineers, external consultants and design firms to assist in debugging and optimizing system performance
  • Assist in the preparation and review of patent applications
  • Evaluate new technologies related to endoscopic image processing
  • Other related duties as may be assigned

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, And Experience

  • MS in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering/Optical Sciences, Physics, Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
  • 3 - 5 years of experience in the field of imaging device product design and development, preferably medical endoscopy or laparoscopy
  • Experience developing specifications for optical/optomechanical/optoelectronic assemblies
  • Knowledge of precision optical/mechanical alignment tools and techniques
  • Demonstrated experience developing systems and processes for optical alignment and testing
  • Expertise in metrology for optical elements and optical systems, including spatial frequency response, color uniformity, chroma level, lateral chromatic displacement, local geometric distortion, texture blur, and visual noise
  • Experience in objective and subjective image and video quality assessment
  • Strong proficiency in Python and OpenCV
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Superior written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to effectively and clearly communicate concepts, ideas and knowledge to other individuals and teams.
  • Comfortable working with and seeking optimum solutions with other team members, as well as team members in adjacent disciplines.
  • Ability to work in a regulated environment in compliance to ISO 13485 and 21 CFR 820 

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, And Experience

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering/Optical Sciences, Physics, Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Proficiency in common optical modeling software (Zemax preferred)
  • Proficiency in CUDA-C/C++
  • Experience identifying, qualifying, and managing turnkey suppliers
  • Scripting and UI development expertise for automated alignment tools with motion control, sensors, and/or machine vision components
  • Expertise in ISP algorithms, ISP tuning and 3A control
  • Expertise in image pipeline parameters and calibration methods
  • Fluency in CAD and a solid understanding of dimensioning / tolerancing principles.
  • Experience in a production environment / comfort working with technicians on the manufacturing floor as well as in the lab
  • Familiarity with CMOS image sensors and serial sensor interface protocols
  • Working knowledge of electro-optical and opto-mechanical system architecture
