The Applied Physics Group within the Physical Sciences Department at UTRC is seeking an experienced scientist or engineer to join multi-disciplinary teams working in the areas of materials physics, optical physics and related nanoscience and surface phenomena (e.g. adaptive lenses, remote and chemical sensing, electro-optical devices, photonic integrated circuits, lasers for manufacturing, fiber optics & devices, metamaterials, liquid crystals and ultrafast photonics).

The candidate is expected to transition novel concepts from early technology stages to a state that impacts and influences UTC businesses and applications. Responsibilities include project creation and development, hands-on experimentation, prototype design and development, fabrication and testing of devices and assemblies pertaining to project-driven goals. Development of physics-based models for analysis and assessment of test data is also required.

Communication of results and scientific interpretation is expected through preparation of professional technical reports, presentations and peer-reviewed publications. Demonstration of leadership skills and assistance with external resource acquisition is also required. The individual will collaborate on teams that include materials scientists, physicists, chemists and engineers to identify and develop new technologies for UTC relating to new materials and devices, new techniques/methods for optical and chemical sensing, as well as new designs for integrated optical systems.

Qualifications

  • The preferred candidate will have postdoctoral experience or industry experience in these technical areas.
  • Additional requirements for the preferred candidate are:
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, proposal writing)
  • Experience with optical system design tools (i.e. Zemax, TracePro) and characterization of optical device performance
  • Strong technical background
  • Adaptability and enthusiasm to work in a team environment
  • Creative and entrepreneurial spirit
  • US Citizen or US permanent resident required.

Education This position requires a PhD degree in physics, materials science, engineering, physical chemistry or a related field. The preferred candidate will have no more than 0-2 years of experience in at least one of these technical areas.
