Job Description: 

The Silicon Photonics Chip Design Engineer will join a team of researchers responsible for the development of silicon photonic devices, particularly those for coherent applications at 100 Gb/s and beyond.  The position requires a strong background in photonic device modeling and analysis of test results, with significant experience in the design of high-speed modulators in silicon.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and Simulation of silicon photonic devices such as modulators and coherent receivers
  • Layout (convert designs into GDSII format) as required
  • Propose and implement design solutions to meet internal requirements and/or customer specifications
  • Evaluate design solutions with physics-based simulations and detailed comparison with test data
  • Design and conduct optical experiments as needed to support design efforts
  • Conduct yield analysis to provide feedback for design optimization
  • Present findings to cross-functional teams
  • Support related teams including fab, test, packaging, and offshore engineering teams to ensure production of low cost, high yield silicon photonics-based products
  • Propose innovative solutions to meet new silicon photonics-based product or market requirements

Requirements and Experience

  • PhD in Engineering or Physics, with solid background in optical physics and silicon photonics
  • Proficiency with RF simulation and design is strongly desired
  • Detailed understanding of current capabilities and market trends in Silicon Photonics 
  • 5+ years of experience in development of silicon photonics components for telecom applications
  • Proficiency with photonics simulation software 
  • Demonstrated drive and aptitude for research and development
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Additional Desired Qualities

  • Familiarity with silicon photonics foundries
  • Familiarity with principles of silicon photonics packaging
  • Proficiency with physical layout and verification software
  • Proficiency with statistical analysis software (SAS JMP)
