Job Description: 
SCOPE
Perform duties to provide for engineering, design, analysis, implementation and testing of state-of-the-art, free-air and fiber optics based interferometric, camera and laser radar systems used for large-scale 3-D metrology, making decisions based on conclusions for which there is little precedent.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Perform engineering and design in the fields of laser optics, opto-mechanics, optic subsystem manufacturing to develop improvements and discover new technology and products available that could enhance or augment the organization’s product lines.
  2. Embrace and enhance the spherical, planar, prismatic and fiber optic components that make up critical subsystems within the company’s products, including: fiber coupling, beam launching, high resolution imaging, beam splitting/combining, beam folding and beam expanding.
  3. Embrace and enhance the manufacturing tools, fixtures and processes that are required to build and service the optical subsystems with the company’s products.
  4. Embrace and enhance the various accessory optical products that built or sold by the company.
  5. Prepare initial models using modern CAE tools to support of proposals and designs as required.
  6. Perform feasibility studies to support proposals for new or improved product or technology. Evaluate and identify and locate parts and components, manufacturers and engineers who would be participants in the adoption of the new product or technology.
  7. Document findings, product and design concepts in the form of reports to management with recommendations regarding implementation and incorporation of new products or technology.
  8. Design and implement experimental evaluation procedures when indicated to investigate new processes and/or product improvement concepts. Analyze and document results of experimentation.
  9. Search patent listings as a way of locating new technology and products. Evaluate findings to develop new concepts, products, equipment or processes, or to develop applications to new uses.
 
Due to the confidential nature of the work, all essential functions must be performed on FARO premises.
 
OTHER DUTIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  1. Perform or assist with any departmental operations, as required or directed to maintain workflow and meet production schedules and requirements.
  2. Maintain safe work areas and comply with safety procedures and equipment operating rules.
  3. Attend and participate in a variety of meetings and task force groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specific level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements and policies.
  4. Recommend revisions to control documentation such as production checklists, operating procedures and policy manuals. Make and distribute authorized modifications as required.
  5. Maintain work area in a clean and orderly condition. Perform other related duties as assigned.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Some lightweight lifting, and occasional lifting of average to heavy weight materials of over 60 lbs. Occasional pushing, pulling, reaching, upper body and arm rotation and climbing. Some bending, stooping and standing. Continuous sitting. Occasional use of hazardous chemicals.
 
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Various mathematical, graphic, design and database software programs, computer and peripherals, mechanical and computerized measuring devices, and standard office equipment. Optical analysis and prototyping tools such as tables, rails and positioning devices. Various analysis tools such as Oscilloscopes and Spectrum Analyzers.
 
HIRING PREFERENCES:
  1. B.S. required; M.S. or Ph.D preferred in Optical Engineering or Physics with excellent academic credentials.
  2. Minimum of 5 years experience in precision optical system design and analysis, including athermal & kinematic component mounting, alignment techniques, UV adhesives, coatings and polarization effects.
  3. Minimum of 5 years experience in visible and IR lasers and fiber optics systems.
  4. Proficient with CAD & CAE tools. Experience with Zemax & Solidworks preferred.
  5. Demonstrated leadership and strong interpersonal skills.
