Job Description: 

The Synopsys Optical Solutions Group (OSG) has an opening for a Technical Intern position in the Application Engineering team, supporting the processing and distribution of measured material and BSDF data for our LucidShape and LightTools products. LucidShape and LightTools use state-of-the-art optical algorithms for the layout, design and analysis of automotive lighting and illumination systems, respectively.

As a member of the Application Engineering team, the successful candidate will be assisting our library creation and maintenance efforts by processing measured data for use by our software, writing or updating data conversion routines, defining data validation processes, updating example models, and populating our library browsers.  The successful candidate will be working on a wide variety of tasks related to our example, material, and BSDF libraries that contribute to the success of Synopsys’ image design software design product, CODE V, our illumination design software, LightTools, and our automotive exterior lighting design software, LucidShape.
Requirements of the position:
The applicant must be proficient in the use of advanced optical system modeling tools and must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. The applicant must be familiar with modern optical engineering methods and tools, have a strong desire and aptitude for working with a commercial software developer, have excellent references, be able to solve problems quickly and accurately. We are seeking a candidate who is self-motivated and is enthusiastic about enhancing our ability to quickly and accurately deliver libraries of data to our optical customers. 

Specifically, we are requiring:

  • 1+ years of optical systems modeling, analysis, and design experience using commercial design tools in an academic or professional environment with excellent references
  • 1+ year experience with Windows scripting languages, such as Visual Basic, VBScript, JavaScript, or similar
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple concurrent projects and ability to work well in a team as well as independently
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to communicate highly technical information to others inside and outside the company
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelors, Masters, or Ph.D. degree in Optics, Optical Sciences, or other related technical discipline

Experience in any of the following is a plus:

  • Familiarity with LightTools or LucidShape
  • Familiarity with surface and material scattering concepts
  • LightTools COM macro writing experience
  • Microsoft COM Programming
  • Microsoft Visual Studio
  • Other procedural or object-oriented languages

Synopsys OSG is a world class, high tech optical software and optical engineering services organization with an international client base and three branch offices.  This position is in Boston, MA. We are looking for someone to start in May/June 2020.
