SUMMARY:

Master the work processes in every production department with hands-on training. Perform process engineering of manufacturing work in all Omega production departments. Inspect and sign off on production variances in Omega shop orders. Develop a special capability in operating and troubleshooting high volume production equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of thermal vacuum deposition and ion-assisted dual magnetron sputtering thin film coating technology.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the manufacturing processes in all the company’s production departments, including Grind & Polish/Configuring, Scribe & Lamination, Ultraviolet, Hard Oxide, Soft Coating, and Final Assembly. Perform hands-on training in each department.
  • Visually inspect products at every step in the manufacturing process on an on-call basis. Sign off on spectral and cosmetic variances in production quality when such variances meet specification.
  • Observe employees’ operation of manufacturing equipment and implement changes in work processes to improve products and reduce costs, using knowledge of fabrication processes, tooling, production equipment, assembly methods, and quality control standards.
  • Develop a special concentration and operation capability in the Syrus Pro 1510 thermal deposition chamber and two Helios dual magnetron sputtering systems.
  • Perform optical coating designs for complex thin film structures for Syrus Pro and Helios machines, utilizing OptiLayer and TFCalc software.
  • Employ a standard component approach to the design process, substrate materials, and packaging. Maintain a limited SKU list of these qualified production designs.
  • Design and develop new production techniques and coatings to meet customer needs.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of how the Syrus Pro and Helios machines operate. Troubleshoot and correct all system failures.
  • Work with the Maintenance Manager to perform all extraordinary and routine repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Provide guidance to Syrus Pro and Helios technicians in cleaning and inspecting substrates, operating the coating chambers, removing tooling from the chambers, cleaning the tooling in bead blasting cabinets, replacing deposition materials or targets, and logging data in company databases. Develop or revise written Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as needed.
  • Perform in-process and final spectroscopy measurements of coated substrates and final evaluation of completed product.
  • Visually inspect finished coatings for adhesion and deteriorations. Consult the Engineering Manager and Technical Director regarding yield issues and/or product failure.
  • Create or revise Manufacturing Control Sheets (MCS) based on communicated customer requirements and Omega’s capabilities, identifying the best methods of manufacture.
  • Develop procedures for operating and maintaining the company clean rooms and clean room equipment, including HEPA filters, ultrasonic clean lines, and flow hoods. Monitor and enforce employees’ adherence to clean room standards.
  • Attend regular Engineering meetings for review of customer orders and manufacturing plans.
  • Achieve proficiency in measuring with the Shack-Hartmann interferometer and Broadband Achromatic Twyman-Green interferometer.
  • Maintain a high level of optical engineering knowledge and contribute to technical advancements of the department.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Educational background in the science of photonics (preferred), technical certification in optic science, or work experience in which this level of knowledge has been acquired. Ability to work independently as well as effectively as a team member. Good communication skills, and enjoyment of a fast moving and challenging work environment. The individual must be strongly committed to research, development and excellence.
