The Minor in Optical Sciences

PhD Candidates

Students majoring in other disciplines may elect to minor in Optical Sciences by completing 12 units of approved Optical Sciences course work with a grade of B or better, passing a written examination based on that course work, and having two Optical Sciences faculty members on their comprehensive examination committee.

Study plans for students wishing to minor in Optical Sciences must be approved in advance by the Associate Dean for Academic Programs.  In general, approval will be only given to plans in which at least 9 of the 12 units are courses for which Optical Sciences is the home department. Opti604 and independent study courses will not be accepted as part of the minor coursework.

Students whose major departments allow them to have a double minor may do one minor of the double minor in Optical Sciences. A student must complete six units of course work in the optics minor with a grade of B or higher in each course, pass a written examination based on that course work, and have one Optical Sciences faculty member on his/her comprehensive examination committee.   All six units of coursework must be in courses for which Optical Sciences is the home department.   The second minor must consist of six units of coursework with a grade of B or higher in each course and is subject to the policies of the department granting the minor.  A minimum of 12 units total is required for the double minor. Optic Minor students should submit a copy of their Plan of Study to the Academic Programs Office, room 403.  For questions, or to find out the dates of the written comprehensive exam offered each fall and spring semester contact Gail Varin, Graduate Student Academic Advisor, gail@optics.arizona.edu
