Under the sponsorship of Optical Sciences Center faculty members, Summer 2004 brings a group of 30 young
women to the Optical Sciences Center for one of our famous
Kaleidoscopes for
Everyone workshops. The students are from IBM's annual
international summer camp for middle school-age girls -- the
camp is called EXCITE: Exploring Interest in Technology and
Engineering. The goals are to encourage the girls' interest in
mathematics and science and to give them an in-depth look at
numerous career opportunities in the field of technology.
At these EXITE Camps, held at IBM locations or university campus around the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific countries, campers learn about engineering topics by creating fun, interactive activities in a team-based environment. The girls may design web pages and computer chips, work with laser optics, animation and robotics or participate in any number of exciting workshops related to science and technology. Participants for the camp are nominated by counselors and teachers at middle schools that are located near an IBM facility and have an established IBM relationship. In order to be considered, female students must have demonstrated ability and interest in math and science, and maintain a minimum average of "C" in the required courses. For more information
