The Arthur G. DeBell Memorial Scholarship
in Optical Sciences

Arthur G. (Jerry) DeBell, OSC Research Specialist and Program Manager until his death in 1986, was noted for his superb instrumental skills and his boundless common sense in technical, political and financial matters.  His pioneering work on balloon-borne, infrared, cryogenic instruments provided the technical shoulders for nearly a generation of Optical Sciences graduate students to stand upon and a significant number of OSC graduates owe their laboratory skill to Jerry's gentle teaching and to his quiet, subtle, and often unnoticed guidance.

In Jerry's honor, a memorial fund was established by his colleagues at Optical Sciences.

Scholarship recipients are selected annually by a committee of Optical Sciences faculty members.  Recipients must be United States citizens majoring in optical sciences or optical engineering.  The scholarship is normally awarded to graduate students but, in exceptional cases, is available to seniors in the Bachelor's degree program.  Selection is based on academic excellence rather than on financial need, and selection criteria include past performance, promise for the future, and a demonstrated intention to pursue a career in applied optics.
