John Tipton Scholarship in Optical Sciences

The scholarship honors all men and women who accept duty and consequence and who dedicate their lives to making positive change in the world, their country, or their community.  Among those honored are students who work to better themselves -- and consequently others -- through the advancement of science.

The scholarship is named for U.S. Army Captain John E. Tipton who was killed in an explosion while conducting combat operations in Iraq.  From a military family, John Tipton enlisted after high school, served in the Middle East during the Gulf War, and was commissioned as an officer in 1995.   His commendations included a Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Valorous Unit award.

The  scholarship was established by Dr. Sean McCafferty.  It supports and/or offers a recruitment incentive for outstanding undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Optical Sciences who are U.S. citizens maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Incoming freshman are eligible to compete for the award having received a minimum 3.4 GPA from their respective high schools. All candidates must qualify as need-based students in accordance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid program standards (FAFSA). At the discretion of the college one scholarship may be offered to recruit an outstanding scholar irrespective of financial need.
