In 1997, John J. Ross, president of the
Rolyn Optics Co. in Covina,
Calif., created the Rolyn Optics Outstanding Graduate Student
Teaching Assistant Awards for OSC students.
Rolyn Optics Co., a supplier of precision
optics since 1925, is a pioneer in the distribution of quality
off-the-shelf industrial and precision optics. Their in-house
fabrication and metrology capabilities enable them to modify many of
their stock items to fit customer needs, and they also supply large
production runs of completely custom parts.
The highly prized Rolyn Optics Awards recognize three graduate
students each semester for their outstanding work in the classroom.
Winners are chosen by student evaluations and faculty
recommendations; selections are based on dedication to student
assistance, design of innovative teaching labs, maintenance of
course websites and excellence in substitute lecturing.
The award consists of a letter of commendation, an award certificate
and a cash prize. Students are able to use their prizes in
any manner they choose. To date, Rolyn Optics Co. has rewarded 81 OSC graduate students.
