OPTI423/523. Optomechanical Design and Analysis (3). Principles that were taught in OPTI421/521(Introductory Opto-Mechanical Engineering) will be applied to develop designs and perform detailed analysis of optomechanical systems. P, OPTI421 or OPTI521

Topics to be covered include: 

·        mechanical drawings

·        finite element modeling

·        mounting of lenses

·        mounting of small mirrors and prisms

·        mounting of large mirrors

·        micro optics

·        athermal system design

·        alignment mechanisms and precision motion control

·        layout of optical instruments

·        use of kinematic mounting

·        advanced materials

·        design for vacuum and cryogenic operation

·        manufacturing issues

 Course Objectives and Expected Learning Outcomes:           

·        Optomechanical design experience

·        Development of software and analytical tools for mechanical analysis

·        Enhancement of skills for writing and technical presentation

·        Experience working as part of a team in an interactive environment

·        Experience applying Systems Engineering methods

·        Functional knowledge for procuring mechanical components

 Class Schedule:

           Three 50-minute lectures per week 

Grading:        

Undergraduate:

  • Homework: design problems and written reports (80%)

  • Oral presentations  (20%)               

Graduate:

  • Homework: design problems and written reports (50%)

  • Oral presentations  (20%)

  • Independent term projects (30%)
