The purpose of Opti 595A is to introduce students to different aspects of current research in the field of optics. The students are expected to attend the weekly optical sciences colloquium and to write a one page summary about each colloquium. A hardcopy of the summary is due the Thursday after each colloquium. The paper can be put in the box outside the professor's office. At the end of the semester, the student has to turn in another one pager, summarizing, comparing and contrasting the different speakers and topics. The student should also give suggestions about the topics and speakers for next semester.

Writing Assignments: For each colloquium, the students should try to answer the following questions:

- What is the topic? Why is this person talking about this? Why should we care? Who would be interested in this?
- What have you learned?
- What are interesting and not interesting? What do you like and dislike?
- Why is this important or not important?
- What is the big picture and what are some of the applications?
- What have you learned?
Grading: Grading will be based on the quality of the write-ups and the final write-up. The student is expected to spend two hours a week on the course, one for attending the colloquium and one for writing the one page report.
