This animation shows a micro-optical element (binary lens) being assembled into an MOT slot.

We have performed preliminary micro-assembly experiments with the help of Sandia National Laboratories.  The image below shows two diffractive lens elements mounted in a bulk-micromachined silicon substrate.  The zones of the relatively high F-number lenslet are clearly visible in the element on the left.  The lens elements are shown from the rear in this image.
