The English-Speaking Union, Tucson Branch

"Mad Dogs and Englishmen: an Unusual Afternoon of Words and Music"

Paula Fan, producer, and Art Kay, co-producer very kindly organized this Concert for the benefit of the Branch on February 2, 2003.

The University of Arizona School of Music Keyboard Faculty -- Pamela Decker, Paula Fan, Tannis Gibson, Jeff Haskell, Suzanne Knosp, Rex Woods, Lisa Zdechlik and Nicholas Zumbro -- joined forces with singer-actors Mary Woods, Betty Allen and Grayson Hirst, KUAT’s Bill Pitts and other guests in two works in which words and music are intertwined: A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare with incidental music by Felix Mendelssohn, and William Walton’s Façade with verses composed by Edith Sitwell.

One hundred and twelve people came to the concert and the total net receipts for the Branch are in excess of $1,200. This included the sale of a wide variety of items: CDs of some of the performers, tote bags and T-shirts, Rita Kay's book, Art Kay’s new book, and home-made English marmalade by Joan Slater. The income from the concert will be divided equally between the Shakespeare Competition, the BUSS program and the reserve fund.

We hope the greatest value of the concert will stem from the publicity it has generated for the ESU and the new members we may attract as a result.

A Debt of Gratitude

Members of the Tucson Branch want to thank Paula Fan, Art Kay, Ed Morgan and all those performers mentioned above for an afternoon of splendid entertainment.

We also want to thank Geneva Cook, Maureen Grobmeier, Linda Killian, Virginia Hill, Jim Shea and Joan Slater for their help with tickets and sales, and Julie Marr Robinson for help with publicity. Finally, we want to thank the Casas Adobes Congregational Church for making the church available for the concert.
