The Tucson Branch, representing Southern Arizona, was established in 1971,
and presently comprises more
than 70 members. It is growing rapidly since emerging from a difficult period
from 1995 to 2000. In the 2001-02 year it increased in membership by 60%,
the largest increase of any Branch in the United States.
The work and interest of Tucson Branch members are focused
primarily on:
 |
Encouraging the study and recital of Shakespeare by local
high-school students by sponsoring a southern Arizona Shakespeare Competition.
This is part of a National Competition held annually at the Lincoln Center in
New York City. We want to increase the number of high schools in southern
Arizona involved in the Competition. Presently the number is in the low
twenties.
|
 |
Initiating a funding drive to offer a British Universities
Summer Scholarship (BUSS) program, to one teacher every year, to study
Shakespeare at a summer-school program in England.
|
 |
Bringing a fuller appreciation of various aspects of English,
and other artistic topics, to our increasing membership, which now includes
several teachers, through a series of talks given by highly qualified speakers
during the year. The speaker programs for the
2001-02 season and the
2002-03
season provide examples of the quality and variety of these events.
