How will my gift be used, and what impact will my gift make?

The College of Optical Sciences maintains its reputation because of its ability to attract and support the world's best students, faculty members and researchers. With your generous support, we will continue to improve our curriculum, support our faculty members and enhance the learning environment for our students.

Why can’t OSC support itself on tuition dollars?

Tuition comprise only a small portion the total university budget, and the money is not specific to any respective college, school or unit. Therefore, only a small portion of the tuition collected helps to support OSC.

Why is it important that OSC be rated the top optical sciences teaching and research venue in the world?

With worldwide recognition come the best and brightest students, groundbreaking research initiatives and the most talented faculty. Regardless of your affiliation, be it alumnus or supporter, you can take pride in knowing you are part of what makes this college the best in the world.

I heard about the Industrial Affiliates program — why can’t the College of Optical Sciences support itself on those membership fees?

Every dollar counts, and the Industrial Affiliates have been incredibly generous. However, their generosity has limits, and we must constantly find new and recurring sources of funding. Each dollar donated makes a difference.

Do you ask OSC employees and faculty members to donate?

Yes. The UA Cares program, developed in partnership between the university and the University of Arizona Foundation, is one of the ways for faculty and staff to “give back” to OSC.

What do you mean by a naming opportunity?

A naming opportunity is a chance for a person or organization to prominently display a name next to a teaching laboratory, conference room or other such room in recognition of support. We have various levels of giving available based on the location.

Why am I asked to donate to the University of Arizona and OSC so often during the year?

Every effort is made to try and limit the number of times you are asked to “give back” to the university and in particular to OSC. However, some fundraising campaigns are conducted independently, and you may be asked by different units at the university. To the extent possible, we try to limit how many times you are asked to give and by whom. The development staff at OSC is available to discuss your concerns and may be able to assist in limiting how many times you are asked to give during the year.
