Large Optics Fabrication and Testing Group |
|
Research Our work involves the design, fabrication and testing of optics and optical systems. The members in our group have expertise in optical systems engineering, optical fabrication, lens design, opto-mechanical engineering, optical testing, computer generated holograms, dimensional stability, and alignment of optical systems. Many of the systems that we work on are quite large, the largest being The Giant Magellan Telescope. We work very closely with the Optical Systems Development and Fabrication facility at the College of Optical Sciences and certain projects at Steward Observatory and Steward Observatory Mirror Lab. In the past, this group has done significant research on large optics for space telescopes, however, our focus at present is primarily ground based systems.

Philosophy Though each member of our group has a solid theoretical background in optics, our group emphasizes training and skill in the practical aspects of optics and engineering. Members of our group teach practical courses, such as the Fundamentals of Applied Optics Laboratory, Practical Optics, and Opto-mechanical Engineering. Besides work and optics, our group enjoys taking field trips to experience the wonderful mountains and sites in and around Arizona. Twice a month we meet at a local pub for dinner and beer, and occasionally we attend a musical performance by members of our group. |
