    "Fiber Lasers and Components Using Specialty Glasses"

    Abstract(s): 

    Fiber lasers have attracted significant attention in the last decade because of many technology breakthroughs, and they have become the major driving force for industrial applications. Jiang's group studies and develops specialty glasses and fibers for fiber laser applications while rare-earth ions doped silica fibers remain as the most popular gain media. In this presentation, Jiang will present ytterbium doped fibers, erbium doped fibers, thulium doped fibers and holmium doped fibers for 1-micron, 1.55-micron, 2-micron and 2.1-micron fiber laser applications, respectively. Single-frequency, nanosecond Q-switched and femtosecond mode-locked fiber lasers will be described. Highly terbium-doped fiber for Faraday rotation and an all-fiber isolator will be presented.

    Speaker Bio(s): 

    Shibin Jiang is president and founder of AdValue Photonics Inc. and an adjunct research professor at the University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences. Before he founded AdValue Photonics Inc in June 2007, he served as chief technology officer and co-founder of NP Photonics Inc. His research covers fiber lasers, fiber amplifiers and photonic devices using nonsilica glasses and fibers. He has authored and co-authored more than 150 publications, edited 18 proceedings books and been awarded 39 U.S. patents. He is the recipient of the 2005 Gottardi Prize from the International Commission on Glass, a 2012 R&D 100 Award and a 2014 R&D 100 Award. He has served as general chair or program chair for 23 technical conferences. Jiang is a fellow of the American Ceramic Society, the Optical Society (OSA) and SPIE.
