    Laser Demonstrates Robust Detection Capability at Distance on University of Arizona’s Rooftops

    An innovative project is underway to develop experimental optical systems capable of detecting chemicals and compounds in the air we breathe using an invisible laser. In early May, both teams met on the roof of the College of Optical Sciences, to test out a PNNL custom-built External-Cavity Quantum Cascade Laser (ECQCL) by shooting an invisible and eye-safe laser across the University of Arizona Mall.

    Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Optical Design Competition Accepting Entries

    Enter the Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Optical Design Competition by Synopsys’ Optical Solutions Group! University of Arizona students are invited to participate in the Synopsys Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Optical Design Competition, which recognizes excellence in optical design projects completed by students. Students can enter an optical design class assignment or thesis work. Cash awards totaling $4,000 are granted each year.

    What's New in Optical Engineering

    recent publication from the Takashima Lab on LIDAR is ranked as the 7th of the most downloaded papers in Optics Express in April 2018. The research team demonstrated a LIDAR system which remotely identifies location and distance of moving objects with a high sampling rate of 3.4K points/s.
