    R. John Koshel, who has served as an adjunct professor at OSC since 1999, will become its associate dean for academic programs on Jan. 22. Koshel, an innovator in the fields of illumination engineering and nonimaging optics, has displayed a longstanding commitment to students, to the academic enterprise and to professional society leadership, all while working in the private sector. John replaces Professor Emeritus Richard L. Shoemaker, who came out of retirement in October to act as interim associate dean.

Also effective Jan. 22, J. Scott Tyo will start a three-year term as chair of the college's newly formed Faculty Academic Steering Committee. This group will guide processes for faculty participation in academic functions and provide a definitive faculty voice for modifications to academic programs where appropriate. While discussion will begin under Tyo's remote guidance during his semester-long sabbatical in Australia, full activity will commence upon his July return.
