Professor J. Scott Tyo reports that the Hollinger Elementary School science fair, run by the UA College of Optical Sciences and Department of Atmospheric Sciences Adopt-a-School team, saw impressive results this year. More than 15 mentors worked with kids from 12 different classes to complete projects; judges had more than 75 different individual, group and class projects to evaluate. They sent 10 projects on to the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

At SARSEF, Ms. Manuela Gildebride's kindergartners (mentored by M.S. student Danielle Doughty and alumna Page King, B.S. in OSE 2012) won first place in physical sciences, with special prizes from Tucson Electric Power and the Arizona Hydrological Association. Ms. Shirley Blair's third-graders (mentored by postdoctoral researchers Pascal Mickelson and Klaus Dolling) received first place in earth sciences, and young Matthew Tyo got an honorable mention from the International Dark Skies Association.

Congratulations to all the organizers, planners, judges, mentors and — most importantly — students!
