After 25 years of service as Technical Specialist to the Wyant College of Optical Sciences, Bryan Smith has retired. Coworkers and friends gathered on Nov. 8th to wish him well and send him off with the knowledge that his work has been appreciated and will be missed. Many stories were shared and some tears were shed. A number of coworkers gave Bryan thoughtful gifts, including a handmade lens display that had been pieced together from the wreckage of an old RV, found by Bryan and coworkers. In 2018 Bryan was nominated by Matthew Dubin and selected for the 2nd Quarter Peer-to-Peer Staff Recognition Award. Matthew aptly summed up Bryan’s significant impact at OSC,

“It is hard to overestimate the contributions Bryan makes to the success of the optics shop. His knowledge and experience are both broad and deep, and he is the go-to person for a variety of subjects. His knowledge of working with large optics is impressive. He's the local expert when it comes to using the laser tracker for precision measurements. His knowledge of machining and use of mechanical setups allows him to make insightful suggestions on how to design any number of systems. Whenever I am starting a design, I always run the concept by Bryan. I don't think I've ever done that and not gotten at least one helpful recommendation. Not only does Bryan have an excellent grasp of how to design a system, he is the person I want putting it together. Whenever we find the inevitable problems, Bryan able to identify them quickly, determine the best solution and execute it quickly. On top of all of this, Bryan is friendly, personable and easy to work with. He is an incredibly valuable asset in the optics shop.”

Congratulations on your retirement, Bryan! All of OSC is wishing you the best in your future! View photos of the retirement celebration.
