Congratulations to Miaomiao Xu who is the 2020 recipient of the Jewell Award for Extreme Optics. Miaomiao is the third recipient of the award. Past recipients of the award include Xin Li for the 2018-2019 year and Hekun Huang for the 2019-2020 year.

Miaomiao shares more about her research,

I am a Ph.D. student working in Prof. Hong Hua’s lab since Fall 2014. My research interests mainly focus on the methods of enhancing optical performances in Head Mounted Displays (HMDs), which cover systematic approaches to model, analyze, optimize, simulate and quantify HMDs as well as to develop novel methods to design and evaluate HMDs. I participated in several research projects involving HMDs. One of my research projects was to explore the design and optimization methods of a geometrical lightguide-based HMD, which breaks the application boundary and limitations of a non-sequential system to be an imaging system. Another interesting research topic I participated in was a commercial HMD development licensed to eSight Corporation, for which I used my optics knowledge to help legally blind patients see and maintain normal lives.
