The college welcomed fresh faces to familiar places in the second half of 2013. Say hello to a few of our newest administrative colleagues:

Holly Brown joined OSC as the graduate academic progress coordinator after Gail Varin's retirement. Holly originally hails from Butler, Penn., and has been with the University for more than seven years. She started working in advising and student services in 2007 and received her M.A. in art education in 2010. Per her own description, Holly loves "the desert, art, movies, traveling and reading"; she and her husband live in Tucson with their dog Toby, "a future Internet star."

In July, Daniel Kilper began his term as research professor of optical sciences and administrative director of the Center for Integrated Access Networks. Kilper, a senior member of IEEE, has spent more than 18 years in telecommunications in both academia and industry. He has authored three book chapters, six patents and more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.

Another addition came to CIAN in August: Ameé Hennig, the new education and outreach coordinator. Ameé, a University of Arkansas grad with a B.S. in physics and English, moved to Tucson with her husband a year ago. She enjoys exploring the myriad hiking opportunities of the Southwest and writing astropoetry, and she looks forward to helping people of all ages find interest in STEM fields.

Maria L. Swarts was named financial and compliance analyst in mid-October. Maria grew up primarily in Parks, Ariz., but moved around for a bit before settling in Tucson. She holds a bachelor's degree in environmental microbiology from Northern Arizona University. Before joining OSC, she worked as a business manager, a grant officer and an administrative officer at UA, the University of Hawaii and San Diego State University respectively. Her hobbies include training and competing with her dogs, hiking with friends and reading science fiction.

Mitzi Miranda became senior accountant on Nov. 1. She replaced Kina Barton, who now serves as business manager at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

And on Nov. 12, Jennifer Garcia filled the senior events coordinator position in Academic Programs. A Colorado native and UA alumna, Jen discovered her passion for event planning while a concierge at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort. She has managed events and operations for MM&A Productions, Kellen Co. and the UA Department of Mathematics, organizing tours, concerts, NBA and NFL fan appreciation events, fireworks displays, cattle drives, continuing education conferences, and more. Jen, who lives with husband Chris and two-year-old son Eddie, is a snowboarding enthusiast, ukelele strummer and avid runner.
