Scientific Community Loses Venerable Leader

Charles M. Vest, former president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the National Academy of Engineering, passed away on Dec. 12. Vest, an expert in holography who received an honorary doctorate from the University of Arizona in 2010, was a stalwart advocate of diversity in higher education and the sciences.
