Flandrau Science Center - Stephen F. Jacobs Wavy Diffraction Grating

In 1996, to uphold Tucson's designation as Optics Valley, Professor Emeritus Stephen F. Jacobs mounted a 53' long wavy diffraction grating atop Tucson's City Hall. Later that year, a second grating was installed over the main entrance of the Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium to welcome and pique the curiosity of museum visitors.

That recently came to an end when the diffraction grating over the Science Center & Planetarium was removed. Bill Plant, director of exhibits at Flandrau, stated the grating was removed for upcoming rennovations and that there were no plans to have it reinstalled. Unfortunately, this brings to a close a decade-long chapter in Tucson's optics history.

For more on how Jacobs designed and brought the wavy diffraction gratings to the public, read the article originally published in the July/August 2009 issue of Optics & Photonics magazine.
