What You Will Be Doing
As the Optical Systems Engineer, you will play a critical role in helping us achieve our mission of using the eye as a window to health for democratizing healthcare. As part of our optics team, you will be responsible for bringing a multitude of advanced retinal imagers to life.

As part of our team, your core responsibilities will be:

  • Breadboarding various optics designs and getting the supporting imaging system architectures set up and prototyped. This will include basic mechanical design as well as “off-the-shelf” control electronics and DAQ architectures and software.
  • Lead efforts in characterizing the imaging performance, debugging the system, improving performance and developing strategies to maximize the system's optical performance in cooperation with the optics design team. This will be in a research environment and transition to a product development role as the maturity of the product progresses.
  • Build complex ophthalmic imaging systems including optical coherence tomography and spectral/narrow band imaging
  • Participate in generating new intellectual property for the company
  • Work in a team and goal oriented environment while embracing shared values and the mission to democratize healthcare

What We Are Looking For
Baseline Skills, Experiences, & Attributes:

  • Strong understanding of practical aspects of optical imaging systems, including understanding of opto-mechanics systems and tolerancing, light sources including lasers (LD, VCSELs), SLDs, LEDs and their drive characteristics, light sensors including CCDs/CMOS sensors, APDs, DLPs as well as others and their data acquisition modes, with key emphasis on design for manufacturability
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in devices and system development related to imaging, treatment or other medical imaging expertise (ophthalmology is highly desirable)
  • Solid utilization of mechanical design tools (such as Solidworks) and data acquisition environments (LabView/Matlab) and data analytic tools (Python/Matlab/ImageJ)
  • Strong background in ophthalmic imaging is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated teamwork ability including working harmoniously in cross functional teams to achieve company level objectives
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of team
  • Great documentation, experimental design, data analysis, and result recording skills consistent with medical device QMS and Design Controls
  • Must be able to work onsite in the Palo Alto, CA office or willing to relocate to the area prior to starting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a domain related to optical science or engineering is highly preferred, or practical industry experience with emphasis in Opto-Electro-Mechanical systems
  • At least 5 years in the medical device industry
  • Experience with Fundus, Optical Coherence Tomography, and/or Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging
  • Broad optical design skill set, including experience with light sources, imaging systems, illumination systems, detectors, radiometry/photometry, metrology, and conceptual mechanical design
  • Significant hands-on experience with specifying, building, aligning, and testing optical systems
  • Experience with optical test equipment and techniques
