Graduate Study Opportunities in High-power Optical Fiber Lasers | Clemson University

Feb. 12, 2024

Background: High-power optical fiber lasers are fast becoming dominant material processing/machining tools in manufacturing and the foundation for a range of scientific frontiers covering quantum computing, particle accelerator, space exploration, nuclear fusion, and many others. High-power Fiber lasers are also the key to direct energy systems being deployed in defense. The job opportunities are plenty ranging from industries, government, to academia.

Graduate research opportunities at Clemson University: Clemson is a key player in all areas of research related to further power scaling of fiber lasers covering advanced glass/crystal material, fiber design, fabrication process, optical characterization, laser design, and laser testing. It has one of the few fiber drawing towers and the only operational Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) system for optical fiber preform fabrication in universities in the US. We are current building a 10kW fiber laser testing facility, a record in universities in the world. Research assistantship is available for US citizens, starting at $30K.
