The demand for optical engineers with baccalaureate-level training is far greater than the number of available graduates.  In response to this national need, the University of Arizona has developed and implemented a program of study leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Optical Sciences and Engineering in the College of Engineering.  This program is ABET accredited and designed to educate optical engineers who will be productive immediately upon graduation in areas involving optical design, optical fabrication and testing, lasers, optical detectors, optical instrumentation, and optical fiber communications.  In addition to the optics core courses, students choose an elective course concentration, called a track (or minor).  The following tracks are available: Opto-mechanics with relevant courses in mechanical engineering, Opto-electronics with a concentration in electrical engineering, Optical Materials with a concentration in materials science, and the Optics track.  The Optics track is the most flexible curriculum for the student, because he/she can choose technical elective courses from any of the science and engineering fields, as well as some business courses with the approval of the advisor.
