Support VIAVI thin film coating R&D, manufacturing, assembly, fabrication, and test processes.  Interface with customers to understand specifications for demanding optical filtering requirements.  Develop designs and solutions to meet customer requirements.  Work within organization to ensure all aspects of customer needs are met. 

This position is located in Santa Rosa, California. VIAVI’s Santa Rosa facility manufactures products for applications in anti-counterfeiting, consumer electronics, government, healthcare and automotive markets, with manufacturing facilities in Santa Rosa CA, Beijing, Suzhou, and Rochester NY.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Interface with customers to understand demanding customer specifications and translate them into manufacturable products.
  • Develop optical thin film coating designs.
  • Develop software and utilize in-house software to perform custom calculations.
  • Specify and/or develop metrology methods (spectral measurement, interferometric, other).
  • Interface closely with internal manufacturing, fabrication, and metrology groups.
  • Lead or work with team to troubleshoot problems with coating processes and metrology.

Success Indicators:

  • Strong background in optics and optical technology.
  • Knowledge of thin film coating design theory and methods.  Ideal candidate has experience with optical coating design software packages such as Essential Macleod, Optilayer, TF Calc, or Film Star.
  • Fundamental understanding of thin film coating techniques such as evaporation, ion-assisted deposition,  and sputtering.
  • Fundamental understanding of optical surface quality metrology using interferometry and other methods.
  • Familiarity with spectrophotometers such as Agilent Cary 5000/6000/7000, FTIRs, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to interface with all levels of staff and leadership.
  • Analytical thinker; detail oriented; problem solver.
  • Self-starter with the ability to both work independently and with cross-functional teams, and to work effectively in multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Capable of working on special projects in addition to normal day to day responsibilities and work in a fast-paced environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Optics, Electrical Engineering, or similar field required, PhD preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience with optical materials, structures, and components.
  • Knowledge of and experience with optical metrology (interferometry, flatness measurement, etc.)
  • Programming experience, Matlab experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills; bias for action.
  • Proficient with computers: strong proficiency with MS Excel and Office.
