Spectra-Physics has an excellent opportunity for an Engineering Technician to join its innovative product development Engineering team to develop cutting edge laser systems. The ideal candidate will contribute to the optical design and prototype assembly of free-space and fiber-based lasers.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the optical characterization and validation of free-space and fiber-based lasers
  • Design and execute experiments to test conceptual designs and perform data analysis
  • Build, test and document system prototypes. Characterize optical performance of systems and optical components (free space and fiber-based) used for building lasers, measure optical and opto-electronic parameters, evaluate results, and create test reports
  • Work with optical component vendors for component procurement, conduct reliability evaluation and qualification of components and products
  • Manage and keep accurate records of engineering material inventory, perform cycle counts, create purchase requisitions
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team and interact with Optical, Electrical, Mechanical,Software, and Manufacturing Engineers in evaluating and documentating opto-mechanical and electro-optical specifications in new product development and in design transfer to production

Required skills and experience

  • AS/Technical degree in Lasers, Optics or related field
  • 5+ years related experience
  • Strong prototyping skills
  • Experience with high power pulsed fiber or solid-state laser testing in an industrial environment
  • Hands-on experience in free-space beam and optical set-up alignment
  • Proven ability to independently set up and perform optical and electro-optic measurements, evaluate the results and clearly communicate the results to engineers and management
  • Proven experience with optical measurement instruments: beam parameters analyzers, power meters, fast opto-electronics, autocorrelators, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers and spectrometers, and scanning interferometers
  • Ability to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills

Preferred skills and experience

  • Hands-on experience with fiber optics, including fiber preparation and splicing and components characterization
  • Experience in troubleshooting and failure analysis of optical modules and systems
  • Hands-on experience with harmonic generation and nonlinear crystals (SHG, THG, SFG)
