Job Description: 

ColdQuanta's Quantum Computing team is looking for a Principal Optomechanical Engineer with deep expertise in mechanical design of complex, precision optical assemblies. As a Principal Optomechanical Engineer, you’ll lead the quantum computing team's optomechanical engineering group and collaborate with a cross-functional team of scientists and engineers whose mission is build the world's most useful quantum computing systems.

ColdQuanta is the world leader in cold atom technology and ColdQuanta's Quantum Computing business unit is developing the world's first universal, gate-model quantum computer using cold atoms. Quantum computing is a novel computing modality that uses the bizarre properties of quantum mechanics to process information in a fundamentally new way. As Nobel laureate Bill Phillips is ascribed to have said – quantum computing is as different from classical computing as a supercomputer is from an abacus. Quantum computers have the potential to radically alter the nature of information processing. ColdQuanta is using laser-addressed cold atom arrays to unlock this revolutionary power. Responsibilities:

  • Collaboration with physicists and optical, electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to gather optomechanical system requirements.
  • Generation of subsystem- and component-level requirements based on analysis and modeling of system-level requirements.
  • Lead the design, assembly, test cycle for optomechanical products from the component level up through large systems consisting of hundreds of precisely aligned optical elements.
  • Lead the design review process (SRR, PDR, CDR) for optical and mechanical systems across the quantum computing team.
  • Characterize optomechanical solutions for performance, reliability, and stability through design, execution, and/or coordination of structured test plans.
  • Mentor and supervise junior optomechanical team members.
  • The successful candidate will have excellent time management skills, experience leading and contributing to multiple development projects overlapping in time, and will thrive in a fast-paced, fast-growing startup environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical, optical, or other relevant engineering field.
  • 10+ years experience working in the fields of optics and optomechanics.
  • Deep expertise in solid optomechanical design and precision alignment of optical and laser systems.
  • Experience with optomechanical fixturing for alignability, stability, and reliability in a controlled environment.

Systems engineering skills:

  • design optomechanical systems to achieve desired performance subject to given time and cost constraints
  • gather requirements from technical stakeholders
  • propagate high level requirements to sub-systems using modeling
  • Familiarity with structural, thermal, and optical analysis tools and methods.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, written, and verbal communication skills.

Desired:

  • Master's degree or higher in mechanical, optical, or other relevant engineering field.
  • Expertise with SolidWorks software tools.
  • Familiarity with Zemax.
  • Experience with optomechanical systems requiring interferometric stability, high-NA optical elements, high off-axis performance, and/or telecentricity.
  • Experience with lasers, fiber coupling, fiber integrated components, electro-optic, acousto-optic, and/or spatial light modulator devices.
  • Experience with design for manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability.
  • Project leadership and project management skills.

Benefits

The budgeted salary for this position is between $101,000/year and $184,000/year depending on background and experience.
