EOSID specializes in the complete optical imaging and remote sensing chain, from the analysis, design, development, integration, test and evaluation of imaging and sensing systems to the processing, exploitation, and visualization of data and imagery. EOSID also specializes in modeling and simulation (M&S) of high energy laser (HEL) propagation, engagements, and effects. EOSID makes critical contributions to national defense in the domains of Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), directed energy (DE), and undersea warfare (USW).


The Mechanical Engineer develops, tests, manufactures, and documents mechanical designs and packaging solutions for a wide variety of components and systems, including aeronautical, aerospace, transportation, military equipment, radar, and electronic systems. Mechanical design includes reverse engineering and redesign of mechanical assemblies and components in complex systems, evaluation of emerging technologies and products, and documentation of the design in 2D and 3D modeling toolsets. This role may create and develop unique, custom hardware from initial concepts to delivery of fully-functional, integrated systems. Additional responsibilities typically include the preparation of technical data packages to specifically document mechanical specifications required to manufacture and assemble a complex assembly. Mechanical analysis and testing is performed such as thermal analysis, vibration, reliability, finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and other environmental testing. Prototyping is supported through selection of components, assembly, and testing. Mechanical engineers are familiar with industry standards, best practices, and processes and can contribute to mechanical trade studies. May require in-depth working knowledge of the mechanical properties of engineering materials, and a thorough understanding of fabrication processes and techniques.


  • Perform mechanical design and documentation using 2D and 3D modeling tools
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical data packages
  • Basic mechanical analysis and test
  • Perform mechanical measurements, component selection, and limited prototyping


  • Perform advanced mechanical analysis and tests such as thermal analysis, vibration, and reliability testing in accordance to MIL, ANSI, and ASME standards.
  • Lead technical efforts in the analysis, design, and construction of EO/IR systems for remote sensing applications
  • Lead the development of research reports, white papers, and competitive proposals
  • Lead the preparation of technical data packages
  • Lead requirements capture for complex prototyping projects
  • Lead multi-disciplinary R&D teams featuring junior and senior researchers, mentor junior researchers, and maintain schedules and budgets to ensure completion of deliverables for major projects
  • Provide technical vision and engineering recommendations to guide sponsor decisions on R&D and program investments
  • Provide level of effort estimates for tasks
  • Document work and capture research findings in internal memorandum, sponsor briefs, conference proceedings, and journal articles
  • Brief senior leadership and sponsors on technical research efforts
  • Support field integration, data collection, and other testing relating to the deployment of systems
  • Participate in business development efforts by contributing to white papers, Request for Information (RFI)/Request for Proposal (RFP) responses, and proposing new research areas suitable for internal research and development (IRAD) funding


  • Experience in computer aided design (CAD) tools such as SolidWorks or NX
  • Experience with manufacturing capabilities (i.e. 3D printing, injection molding, machining, etc.)
  • Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Experience in mechanical analysis (i.e. Thermal, Vibration, and Reliability Testing)
  • Experience with active and/or passive elecro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) systems and sensors such as lasers, VIS/SWIR/MWIR/LWIR imagers, Avalanche Photo-Diodes (APDs), photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), hyperspectral imagers, or lidar
  • Experience with systems engineering processes for the documentation, derivation, and verification of system requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in the requirements capture and verification phases of projects involving the development of mechanical hardware
  • Demonstrated ability in leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams in the development of mechanical, optomechanical, and/or electromechanical hardware


  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Experience in MATLAB and/or Python
  • Experience with optical design and/or M&S tools (e.g., Zemax, Code V, OSLO, TracePro, DIRSIG, etc.)
  • Experience in performing optical measurements and experiments
  • Experience with optomechanical tolerancing and Structural, Thermal, and Optical Performance (STOP) analysis
  • Experience designing, modeling, and integrating high precision mechanisms tailored toward motion control

  • 9 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Imaging Science, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Civil Engineering, or related technical field
  • 7 years of related experience with a Masters’ degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Imaging Science, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Civil Engineering, or related technical field
  • 4 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Imaging Science, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Civil Engineering, or related technical field


Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.


Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
