We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee in the Photonic and Phononic Microsystems Department with an emphasis in nanophotonic and microphotonic technologies.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Support research involving silicon photonics, nanophotonics, nano‐opto‐mechanics, quantum optics, and/or nonlinear optics.
  • Support research in areas including optical interconnect, optical emitters and detectors, optical‐forces in nano‐ optomechanical waveguide and cavity system.
  • Integrated quantum optical systems, metamaterials, plasmonic and phononic devices, and other optical technologies.
  • Design, simulate, fabricate, and/or characterize novel optical devices, materials, and systems.
  • Study new physics phenomenon and evaluate new concepts.
  • Report research results in top‐tier journals and conferences.
  • Generate new intellectual property through patent filing.

Qualifications We Require

  • You have a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering or Science, Physics, or other related STEM technical areas, conferred within five years prior to employment.
  • You possess experience in design/simulation of optical metamaterials.
  • Your background include experience in finite element method tools, such as COMSOL, Matlab/Simulink, FDTD codes, etc.
  • You have experience performing original research, demonstrated through a record of invention, original publication in top‐tier journals, and conference papers and presentations.
  • You can obtain a DOE Q security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Ideally, your background would also include:
  • Experience in the design and simulation of optical metamaterials.
  • Experience with nonlinear optical measurement techniques and basic theories for treatment of nonlinear phenomena.
  • Experience in IR and terahertz optical test and characterization techniques, associated optics, detectors and spectroscopies.
  • Experience in design and simulation of novel optical structures and materials with commercial and custom codes.
  • Experience in near‐infrared optical test and characterization techniques, associated optics, detectors, and spectroscopies.
  • Familiarity with laboratory optical bench optics, electronics, optoelectronics, and safe use of lasers; able to design and carry out laser‐based optical experiments.
  • Experience with micro and nano fabrication processes, tools, and metrology.
  • Self‐motivated, with strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Expertise in integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, ultrafast optics, solid state physics, materials, or related topics.

The Photonic and Phononic Microsystems Department develops and matures state of the art photonic and phononic technologies for a variety of national security purposes. Our team of interdisciplinary researchers innovates, develops, and applies novel technologies including silicon photonics, nanophotonics, optomechanics, metamaterials, plasmonics, optical detectors, guided wave optics, phononic and thermoelectric technologies, spanning fundamental research and path‐finding engineering solutions.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q‐level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre‐employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q‐level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Position Information

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia’s discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
