Job Summary & Responsibilities

Primary Purpose of Role

The Optical Engineer will design, develop, build, and test systems and products based on optic, photonic and laser technologies. The successful candidate will interact with device, hardware and software design teams to assist in overall development of optical systems; specifying, selecting and qualifying active and passive optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures and/or evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentation. The capability to apply quantitative analysis in determining root cause of highly technical problems and propose, develop, and implement solutions for corrective action is highly desirable.


  • Develop, construct and test prototype metrology systems and optical assemblies to budget on schedule
  • Document technology gaps and provide recommendations to management
  • Deliver hardware specifications for high volume capable products 
  • Perform error budget and tolerance analysis
  • Work effectively as part of a multifunctional development team
  • Troubleshoot, develop plans of action, and execute in a timely manner
  • Make both internal and external technical presentations on work product


  • M.S. in Engineering or Physics with a focus on optics
  • 3-5 years of experience in optical systems or hardware development
  • 1-5 years of experience in infrared systems, analysis, and applications development including use of infrared sources and detectors
  • Prior experience with semiconductor capital equipment would be preferred including working knowledge of optical processing, metrology and/or inspection products

Candidate shall have demonstrated key successes in one or more of the following areas:

  • Zemax proficiency specifically on sequential and non-sequential ray tracing, physical optical propagation, and optical error budgets
  • Mathematica, Matlab, Python, C# proficiency
  • working on prototype systems in a hands-on laboratory setting and new product development and support in the semiconductor field
