VIAVI Solutions is seeking a motivated and creative Optical Engineer to add to the team.  This individual’s focus will be to model, design, and fabricate diffusers, beam-shaping components, and diffractive optical elements.  The successful candidate will interact closely with the Director of R&D and various work leaders within the company as well as customers and vendors. 

The ideal candidate will have a knowledge of physical optics, electromagnetic theory, and the propagation of electromagnetic wave propagation through various media, including polarization effects.  

This position is located in Rochester, NY.  VIAVI’s Rochester facility designs and manufactures products for applications in 3D sensing, micro-refractive and diffractive optics for consumer electronics, government, healthcare, and automotive markets. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Designs, develops, builds and tests systems and products based on optic, photonic and laser technologies.
  • Interacts with device, hardware and software design teams to assist in overall development of optical systems; specifying, selecting and qualifying active and passive optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures and/or evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentation.
  • Provides multi-discipline support to instrumentation production by resolving technical issues associated with components, parts, products or systems; testing of new and existing designs and documentation of changes through a formal engineering change notification process.
  • May provide recommendations for cost reduction efforts.
  • May apply quantitative analysis in determining root cause of highly technical problems and propose, develop and implement solutions for corrective action.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Optics, Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years of experience (or equivalent education) in an Optical Engineering role
  • Strong problem-solving skills with an emphasis on the development of beam-shaping components
  • Strong Analytical & laboratory skills
  • Experience in computer programming languages – specifically MATLAB
  • Experience working with optical design software (Zemax, CodeV, ASAP, or LightTools)
  • Strongly Motivated and inquisitive individual
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills
  • Proficient with MS Office tools – Excel/Office
