Job Description:
R-1529 Optical Systems Engineer

Company Overview: Onto Innovation is a leader in process control, combining global scale with an expanded portfolio of leading-edge technologies that include: 3D metrology spanning the chip from nanometer-scale transistors to micron-level die-interconnects; macro defect inspection of wafers and packages; metal interconnect composition; factory analytics; and lithography for advanced semiconductor packaging. Our breadth of offerings across the entire semiconductor value chain helps our customers solve their most difficult yield, device performance, quality, and reliability issues. Onto Innovation strives to optimize customers’ critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster and more efficient.

Site Overview: The Onto Innovation Bend Oregon site has a broad range of metrology products. These are primarily FTIR, Photoluminescence, and UV-VIS reflectometry, but we continue to drive new technologies as well. We are a small team of around 20 engineers of mixed disciplines, working on R&D of new metrology systems, improvements for existing systems, and sustaining support for the many systems we have at customer sites across the world.

Job Summary & Responsibilities: This role is primarily responsible for developing new optical metrology systems and measurement capabilities. Projects typically include working closely with a small group of engineers of a range of disciplines – electrical, mechanical, optical, software, and applications. The optical systems engineer plays a critical role in this team, performing the hands-on alignment of the optical system and providing feedback on any modifications needed to the optical design or mechanical fixturing. This role also is expected to have a forward-looking view to novel metrology system design for next generation systems.
A successful candidate is expected to:
• develop and construct prototype metrology systems to budget on schedule
• document technology gaps and provide recommendations to management
• critically analyze current optical systems and highlight improvements
• deliver hardware specifications for new high volume capable products
• work effectively as part of a multifunctional development team
• troubleshoot, develop plans of action, and execute in a timely manner
• make both internal and external technical presentations on work product
• generate company IP for novel metrology systems designs

Qualifications:
Candidate for this position must have met minimum requirements to successfully meet expectations for the position:
• Ph.D. in Engineering or Sciences with a focus on optical physics
• 2-3 years of experience in optical process or hardware development
• 3-5 years of experience in infrared systems, analysis, and applications development including use of mid-infrared source and detector hardware
• Additional experience with photoluminescence , fluorescence, and/or Raman microscopy preferred
• Prior experience with semiconductor capital equipment including working knowledge of optical processing, metrology and/or inspection products

Candidate shall have demonstrated key successes in one or more of the following areas:
• working on prototype systems in a hands-on laboratory setting
• new product development and support in the semiconductor space

Onto Innovation is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We offer competitive salaries and a generous benefits package, including health/dental/vision/life/disability, PTO, 401K plan with employer match, and an Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP) along with health & wellness initiatives.
