Spectra-Physics is the Lasers Business Unit of MKS Instruments.  We have an excellent opportunity for someone like you to join our innovative product development engineering team as a Senior Mechanical Engineer.  In this position, you will contribute to the design of free-space and fiber-based laser systems.  You will work interactively within a project team and use your excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional team members.  We push the boundaries of technology to develop a wide range of nanosecond, picosecond, and femtosecond lasers that address the needs of Industrial, Scientific, and Life and Health markets.  If you have a passion for working with cutting-edge solutions, this is the role for you.

What you will do is:

  • Modeling, designing, and development of complex opto-mechanical systems for our next generation industrial laser products. You will work in a diverse, dynamic, multifunctional team environment.  
  • Work with Project Managers and Product Marketing to define system requirements, complete feasibility tasks, and support product through production.   
  • Work closely with Project Managers to prioritize and execute plans for key development milestones.  
  • Provide hands-on support for all aspects of design, modeling, development, documentation, and transfer to manufacturing.  
  • Interface with Manufacturing Engineers to ensure a smooth transition to production.  
  • Adhere to established development standards   

What you will bring to the role and to our team are the following qualifications and engineering skills:

  • BSME and 5+ years of experience in designing, prototyping, and testing of precision mechanical products; advanced degree is plus
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and fundamentals including design principles, materials, fabrication method, optical mounting, material stability, particle and contamination control
  • Understanding of engineering tolerance and error budgets, knowledge of GD&T
  • Proficient in 3D solid modeling using CAD, ProE / Creo or Solidworks
  • Experience with thermal, structural, and flow analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques
  • Problem resolution skills applied to providing solutions involving new design and assembly techniques, technologies, and concepts
  • Proficient in defining requirements, release of documentation, and technical writing.  Effective communication skills are key to success in this position
  • Able to deliver in a dynamic, challenging, and fast-paced working environment to challenging development schedules
