Spectra-Physics is the Lasers Business Unit of MKS Instruments.  We have an excellent opportunity for someone like you to join our innovative product development engineering team as a Senior Electronic Engineer.  In this position, you will contribute to the design of free-space and fiber-based laser systems.  You will work interactively within a project team and use your excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional team members.  We push the boundaries of technology to develop a wide range of nanosecond, picosecond, and femtosecond lasers that address the needs of Industrial, Scientific, and Life and Health markets.  If you have a passion for working with cutting-edge solutions, this is the role for you.

What you will do is:

  • Coordinate closely with optical engineers, physicists, marketing & customers to develop, deliver & support industry-leading laser systems.
  • Provide hands-on assistance to optical engineers in laboratory experiments. Hands-on troubleshooting of complex electro-optical systems.
  • Board-level (PCB) design in Altium. Emphasis on low-noise analog & RF design. Experience with circuit simulation (LTSpice).
  • High bandwidth ADC/DAC, mixed-signal systems & ARM microcontroller design & development.
  • Design & support cables & system components for industrial laser systems with an emphasis on design for manufacture and high reliability.
  • Support products through the lifecycle. Assist in obsolescence & RoHS. Perform failure analyses and implement corrective actions (design & procedure updates.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing engineers to ensure smooth product release.

What you will bring to the role and to our team are the following qualifications and engineering skills:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or related field and 5+ years of experience; advanced degree is a plus
  • Understanding of electronics, analog & digital, serial data communication protocols (I2C, SPI, RS-232, USB, Ethernet)
  • Embedded and Mixed-analog/digital systems experience
  • PCB Design (schematic capture & layout) in Altium
  • Familiarity with operation of test equipment, oscilloscopes, DVM’s, function generators
  • Quality-driven. Committed to meeting schedules.  Able to balance performance, cost, & time constraints. Excellent documentation skills.
  • Software & FPGA skills (C++, Python, Verilog) and laser/opto-electronics experience a plus
