Job Description: 

Purpose of the Position

Thorlabs is seeking candidates with strong analytical skills who are willing to take on a variety of business intelligence projects. This position is responsible for generating actionable data to support decisions related to sales and marketing, new business opportunities, product development, acquisitions, and the overall strategic direction of the company. He/she will be able to think of ways to creatively provide a basis for decisions on niche markets where more traditional sales and marketing information is not readily available. The successful candidate will have the ability to generate, manipulate, and analyze large data sets. This role requires a high degree of independence, attention to detail, and a strong desire to mine data for actionable information.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct market research in, but not limited to, Photonics, Semiconductor, Medical Device, Defense, and other key market segments.
  • Perform and clearly convey competitive analysis from all aspects of the business including sales, product development, and financial perspectives.
  • Work with stakeholders from executive management and business units to define data needs and inform decision making
  • Identify sales and marketing opportunities for Thorlabs’ various product lines.
  • Participate in special projects related to Thorlabs’ business strategies.

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

  • This role requires 3+ years of experience in marketing, business development, or product line management, or a similar role


  • B.S. in a photonics related field required, graduate degree or equivalent experience in a photonics-related science or engineering discipline is preferred.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written presentation skills with the ability to influence and educate.
  • Eagerness to learn about new technologies, applications, and business models.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to multitask, be detail oriented, and creatively solve problems, all while under time constraints.
  • Excellent data manipulation skills (Advanced user of Excel or equivalent)
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office and other communication tools
  • Knowledge of MS Dynamics AX, and Dynamics 365 CRM a plus
  • May require travel to technical conferences or other Thorlabs entities (less than 5% travel)
