HEL: 2023 Research Engineer II | Raytheon Technologies

The High Energy Laser Engineering Department is currently seeking a Research Engineer II in McKinney, TX.  Apply interest, knowledge and experience in optics and lasers in the areas of design, analysis, integration or testing to develop advanced optical imaging telescopes, spectrometers, lasers, radars, or special test equipment.  This may include performing critical opto-mechanical alignments on state-of-the-art hyperspectral optics, assembling and testing of laser demos, troubleshooting of refractive or reflective optical assemblies for airborne imaging systems.  It could also include analyzing laser propagation and detection, line-of-sight tolerances, or calculating radiometric budget allocations.  Work in a team environment

The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance.  U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Required Skills:

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) optics (2) high energy lasers, (3) electromagnetic propagation, and their interaction with materials

  • Experience with optics or laser lab and/or analysis projects including error analysis

  • Experience with optical design and analysis tools, such as Code V or Fred

  • Experience with hands on assembly and alignment of optical tests or assemblies

  • Experience with optical measurement tools, such as interferometers and spectrophotometers

  • Experience working with lasers

  • Proven leadership experience

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Desired Skills:

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (Please upload an unofficial transcript when applying)

Required Education:

  • MS in Physics, Optics, or related STEM degree.

  • This position requires 12 months or less of relevant professional work experience (excluding internships)
