    Scholarships and Fellowships

    2021 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship in Optical Design 

    The Scholarship is to be awarded to a student of optical design, where the term 'optical design' is meant to include both lens design and illumination design. OSC student have been awarded this scholarship in recent years Brandon Hellman was selected as the 2020 recipient and in 2018 another OSC student, Caleb Gannon was selected. 

    • Deadline: March 31, 2021
    • The candidate must meet the entry criteria for the chosen course of study or research.
    • The candidate must have at least one year after the award to completion of their chosen course of study.

    Goldwater Scholarship (DUE SOON!)

    The Goldwater Scholarship awards up to $7500 to sophomores and juniors who are majoring in STEM fields and who have undertaken, or who want to pursue, a research-based graduate degree and career. The application for the 2021 competition is open. The Goldwater Scholarship Program, one of the oldest and most prestigious national scholarships in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics in the United States, seeks to identify and support college sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming this Nation’s next generation of research leaders in these fields.

    2021 SPIE Scholarships

    The application for 2021 SPIE Scholarships for the 2021-2022 Academic year is now open, apply here. SPIE scholarships are available to students studying optics and photonics. The application deadline is February 15, 2021.  OSC has had multiple student recipients in prior years.

    Raytheon Missiles & Defense SPY-6 Scholarship

    Raytheon Missiles & Defense, a Raytheon Technologies business, has begun accepting applications for its SPY-6 scholarship to benefit U.S. Navy student veterans. In partnership with Student Veterans of America (SVA), two $10,000 scholarships will be awarded to sailors who pursue a degree at an accredited university and demonstrate leadership in their local community. Applications will be accepted on the SVA website from Jan. 13 to April 5, 2021. 

    Society of Women Engineers Scholarships

    The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to women admitted to accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science. In 2018, SWE disbursed over 238 new and renewed scholarships valued at over $830,000.

    Funding Opportunities

    UA Richard H. Tyler Student Emergency Fund Application

    The Richard H. Tyler Student Emergency Fund is intended to cover temporary costs that may hinder a student from succeeding academically or from meeting their basic needs. Traditionally students may only apply for assistance once per academic year, but due to the significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our students’ success, the federal government has provided additional funds for those demonstrating exceptional need and all students enrolled for Spring 2021 are eligible to apply at this time. 

    Graduate RA and TA Opportunities

    RA Opportunity with Dr. Driggers: Multi-Drone, Multi-Sensor ISR

    New OSC Professor Dr. Ron Driggers is looking for an EE or Optics student for a funded graduate research assistant.  The subject of the research is “multi-drone, multi-sensor ISR (intelligence-surveillance-reconnaissance).”   The reseach is expected to lead to a number of publications that can used for Masters Thesis or Doctoral Dissertation.  Funding at this time is for an academic year, and he expects to receive additional funding for summer and follow on year and to continue on afterwards.  Candidates shold have the following interests/experience:

    • Must be a US Citizen
    • Learning to fly drones and use EO and IR imagers.  Must be willing to get drone license.
    • Experience with software, 3D printing, integrating optics and electronics a plus
    • A course in microprocessors and communications helpful
    • Early PhD student preferred, Masters OK.  Possible senior if willing to go on to grad school.
    • Research will be in the area of electro-optics and infrared systems

    Undergraduate Research Assistant Position with Milster Research Group

    The Milster Research Group has an immediate opening for an Undergraduate Research Assistant, who will assist in making glass mold preforms for a new type of astronomical telescope lens.  The job entails mechanical lapping and polishing of glass with custom equipment. Candidates who are familiar with hand tools, mechanical devices and machinery are preferred. The successful applicant must be able to lift 50 lbs from a lapping platen, and training will start with experienced team members as soon as possible. The schedule is flexible, depending on team member academic and other responsibilities.  The successful applicant will be expected to work between 10 hrs/wk to 20 hrs/wk in the laboratory by following appropriate safety and health protocols.
