Research Summary:

The Advanced Optical Networking Lab, directed by Milorad Cvijetic, has conducted research in optical transmission and networking, including activities related to the following:

  • high-speed optical transmission systems
  • advanced optical access and data center networks
  • multilayer elastic optical networks
  • optical quantum communications
  • free space optical transmission systems
  • employment and optimization of photonic and electronic technologies for optical transmission systems and networks

Their research deals with advanced adaptive multidimensional coded modulation formats that employ spectral (OFDM, Nyquist WDM) and spatial (spatial mode-based MIMO) components and multidimensional coherent detection schemes. Cvijetic's team has proposed so-called “spatial-spectral multidimensional concept,” which have been utilized for ultra-high-speed real-time optical networking experiments, as well as high-capacity quantum communication channels over optical fibers and free space.
