NEW GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP HONORS PROFESSOR JAMES T. SCHWIEGERLING

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR AY24-25 ACCEPTED THROUGH MARCH 17

The Wyant College of Optical Sciences announces the establishment of the James T. Schwiegerling Graduate Student Scholarship in Optical Sciences in honor of the late Emeritus Professor of Optical Sciences, Dr. James T. Schwiegerling, Robert Shannon Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences. The deadline for submitting an application for this and other scholarships held at the College is March 17, 2024. To learn more about the application process view here.

GRAND CHALLENGES RESEARCH BUILDING UPDATES

A lot has been happening in the new year! Visit the GCRB Updates page to see more including a January 2024 timelapse walkthrough and photos, a video of a telescope mirror delivery, and a video of an optics table delivery and installation (over forty additional optics tables are currently being delivered and installed!). 

VISIT CAMPUS FOR UARIZONA MUSEUM DAY

As part of UArizona Museum Day, the Greivenkamp Museum of Optics will be open on Saturday, March 23, to visitors and give free public tours from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. For the first time, museums across the University of Arizona are proud to offer free or reduced admission in celebration of UArizona Museum Day 2024. PRISM WEEK: OPTICS AROUND THE WORLD | MAR. 25-29

Join us for a Prism Week focused on "Optics Around the World." Each day of the week will include virtual presentations from SPIE and Optica Chapters around the world, totaling 25 chapters! Additionally, each afternoon there will be an in-person workshop or event. Find the most up to date details here.

RON DRIGGERS AND CO-AUTHORS NAMED RECIPIENTS OF THE 2024 JOSEPH W. GOODMAN BOOK WRITING AWARD

SPIE and Optica have announced Ronald G. Driggers (University of Arizona), Melvin H. Friedman (George Mason University), John W. Devitt (RVS Tactical Products), Orges Furxhi (imec), and Anjali Singh as the 2024 recipients of the Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award for their Introduction to Infrared and Electro-Optical Systems, Third Edition. The professional societies have announced the award via press release. DAEWOOK KIM SPEAKS AT SKYCENTER'S "STARS OVER SABINO" PUBLIC EVENT | MAR. 15-16

Join the Steward Observatory Mount Lemmon SkyCenter for the 2024 Stars Over Sabino event on March 15-16, a free and public opportunity to participate in a variety of activities and hear from special speakers. Among the speakers is Prof. Daewook Kim, Associate Prof. of Optical Sciences, who will speak March 15 at 6 p.m. on his work, "Extremely Large Telescope Visiting the Past of Cosmos." JACLYN JOHN NAMED 2024-2025 ARCS SCHOLAR

Wyant College of Optical Sciences PhD student, Jaclyn John, was selected as a 2024-2025 ARCS Foundation Scholar. According to the ARCS Foundation Phoenix Chapter, their mission is to advance, "science and technology in the United States by providing financial awards to academically outstanding doctoral students studying to complete degrees in science, engineering and medical research."

KENT ROCHFORD RECOGNIZED AS UA 2024 ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR FOR OPTICAL SCIENCES

The University of Arizona Alumni Association announced Dr. Kent Rochford as the 2024 Alumnus of the Year for the Wyant College of Optical Sciences. The Alumni of the Year ceremony took place February 22, 2024.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION RECOGNIZES LATE PROFESSOR EMERITUS JIM SCHWIEGERLING AT 2024 WAVEFRONT CONGRESS

At the recent 2024 Wavefront Congress, the late Professor Emeritus Jim Schwiegerling, Robert Shannon Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences, was remembered in a special presentation led by two alumni that he advised. The presentation given on March 8, 2024 was called, "Jim Schwiegerling: The Nicest Professor in the College Also Happens to be Brilliant" and was organized and given by Nathan Lewis, PhD (OSC 2011) and Deanna Moschitta, MS (OSC 2022). WATTS HAPPENING

SHETECH 2024 A SUCCESS

Wyant College of Optical Sciences worked with nearly 60 high school girls participating in SheTech on March 1st, 2024 to build Pringles Can-Pinhole Cameras at the Tucson Convention Center. City of Tucson Office of Economic Initiatives oversees the annual Arizona SheTech Explorer Day 2024. The day‐long, industry‐led STEM exploration event provides hands‐on, interactive activities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for rising 9th through 12th grade girls. A special thank you to the volunteers of this event including Meredith Kupinski, Hillary Mathis, Clarissa DeLeon, Annyun Das and Paola Luna.
